A Cubs fan’s notes
Just got finished watching the Cubs put the big hurt (pun intended, Sox fans!) on the our crosstown rivals. I’m a baseball purist so I hate interleague play, but I have to admit I love watching my beloved Cubbies beat the hated White Sox. A nine-run fourth inning is just gravy. And a come-from-behind, walk-off homer yesterday? Man, it doesn’t get any better than that.
Sorry I haven’t had more updates since I’ve been away from the office, but I haven’t had an Internet connection for most of the week and I’m suffering withdrawal. It’s amazing how ill-informed I feel without Internet access. I always knew TV news was a terrible way to keep up with current events, but, man, it’s even more brutal during this election season.
On Thursday I went to a wake to support an old friend of mine from City News Bureau of Chicago — his mother died. I caught up with an old mutual friend of ours there and afterward we met up with another City Newser who’s now one of the top political writers for the Chicago Sun-Times. I found myself pressing him for the inside dope on the presidential election and he regaled us with a terrific tale of how he infiltrated a closed-door gathering featuring Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Father Michael Pfleger. Then I pumped him for more information on Barack Obama, who he’s known since his days as a professor at the University of Chicago when he would call him as a constitutional law expert. Not surprisingly, the man he once had on speed dial is a bit harder to get in touch with these days. My reporter friend tells me he hasn’t changed much over the years. It’ll be interesting to see if success will go to his head.
Speaking of Rev. Wright, I was going to try to visit Trinity United church while I’m in town because Rev. Sarah Halverson (one of our In Theorists extraordinaire) also happens to be in Chicago this week and she invited me to go along with her. She’s part of the same denomination as Trinity and she’s taking classes here this week. Not sure if I can make it as I fly out tomorrow, but we’ll see.
Geez, I just realized I might have jinxed the Cubs….
