Detroit Duchy Madness

I’m a little jealous. But not too much. Greer Wylder, who writes the “Best Buys” column for us on Fridays,  scored an interview with Frank Black and his wife Violet Clark, who have their own band, Grand Duchy.

I interviewed Frank Black, a.k.a. Black Francis of the Pixies, back in 2002, but that was over the phone.I found him extremely witty, and I should add oddly punctual. I say oddly because in all my years of chasing around rock stars it was less fun than herding cats. Cameron Crowe’s movie “Almost Famous,” captures it perfectly. It’s almost impossible to pin them down and when you do it’s never, ever on time. But Frank’s interview started exactly on time, and he called me. That was also the year I interviewed Kim Deal of the Breeders and bassist of the Pixies. But I did that one in person. Surprisingly, they were both open to talking about the Pixies and given the bad blood that went down when that seminal band splintered apart that struck me as unusual. I wondered if the Pixies might get together again. My instincts were right as they regrouped in 2004 for a series of concerts.

So Greer asked me for a little background because she knew I’m a Pixies freak. I had a chance to piggy-back along for the interview and video she had planned when Grand Duchy performed at Detroit Bar Friday night, but I took a pass. I was just too tired from all that drawing I did all week and I dreaded the almost always inevitable all-night wait for the interview. Sure enough, Greer waited hours to talk to Frank and Violet, but what she came up with in the video above is very cool and well worth watching. Especially if you’re a big Pixies fan like me.

P.S. She didn’t get a scoop on more Pixies shows, darn it. But I do know there’s a Pixies show scheduled for the Isle of Wight festival in June. But, according to Greer, Frank and Violet sure seem like a cozy couple.

“You can tell he’s madly in love with his wife,” she said.

Who knew? Black Francis in love… I guess you can say they’re “chained.”
