Staff sketchings, part 2

Here’s the second sketch from my failed project. It’s of Brady Rhoades, our editor. This time I was drawing from one of my own photographs, which I prefer to do. It’s much easier to work from an original photograph than it is from someone else’s image. I learned this lesson many years ago when I offered to do a wedding portrait of some friends. I used one of their wedding shots as the primary source and it took me months to do. It never turned out right either, but I gave it to them anyway.

What you won’t see in the Pilot redesign

Some weeks ago I was asked to do some drawings of our fearless leaders so we could run them mug-shot size Sundays on the page featuring editorials and letters to the editor. It was part of the Pilot’s redesign.

Cracking the Code

Lori Brystan‘s been working on this dream for five years.

She wanted a cool Friday night destination, something beyond the usual dancing to a DJ and drinks, something evoking the kind of grown-up fun our parents and grandparents enjoyed. Real live music, dancing, singing, dinner and drinks. Imagine seeing Ol’ Blue Eyes or Sarah Vaughan  crooning in front of a cool jazz quartet while you enjoy fine dining. Maybe you even get up for some slow dancing after dinner.
