Picking your battles
Ever have a fly get in the house and it just keeps buzzing your ear. It could fly just about anywhere else, but nooo your ear is the place to be. So then you get obsessed with swatting it. You drop everything, you pick up an old magazine and you’re flailing around to smash it. Maybe you even get it eventually, depending on your dexterity. But, chances are, the only benefit is losing some calories.
Lately, a (gad)fly’s been buzzing us here at the Pilot, regularly taking pot shots. I was about to try to swat him when I got some very sage advice from our attorney. It’s time-tested advice: Pick your battles.
So to the hecklers, go ahead, keep taking your best shots. I don’t care. I know we’re doing a lot of excellent work here at the Pilot. Our coverage of the president last week was superb on every level. Brianna Bailey’s sidebar on the crowds outside was one helluva read that got a great discussion going on dailypilot.com and Alan Blank’s news story nailed it. I even threw in an analysis piece. To top it all off we had a terrific video (thanks to Don Leach for the photo of me above as I was about to go cover President Obama’s town hall meeting) and multiple photos. And we gave you even more in our Political Landscape column.
I don’t care about the haters. I’m just going to stay positive. Just so you know, I’m not naive. I understand the challenges we’re facing in our industry. But I’ve never been one to lust after awards, celebrity or praise from the boss. No matter how hard my job can get I want you to know I get out of bed every morning for you, dear reader. Like any business, I’m here for our customers. As long as I’m here (and even when I’m gone) the Daily Pilot is always going to go above and beyond the call of duty to inform you. And that’s a lot more important than getting in tit-for-tat exchanges with gnats.
Keep up the good work!
Might I suggest a can of Raid for your pesky annoyance? Or, you can just consider the source and continue to ignore him, er, it. I concur with Ron Wagner – Keep up the good work!
Paul, I love your stay positive attitude!
